Abstract
This study sought to verify the partially mediating effects of countertransference on the relationships between stress coping styles and burnout among play therapists. The subjects, 233 play therapists working in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, were assessed by means of 3 inventories; The Ways of Coping Checklist, the Inventory for Burnout about Child Counselors, and the Countertransference Factors Inventory: CFI. The main results of this study were as follows. First, it was found that the various stress coping styles of play therapists had significant effects on burnout. Second, it was revealed that active coping as a form of stress coping had significant effects on all the sub-factors of countertransference and passive coping had a significant effect on 4 sub-factors of countertransference management abilities; self-insight, self-integration, empathy ability, and anxiety management. Third, these results also indicated that, active coping had a direct effect on affected burnout and also indirectly impacted upon it through self-integration, empathy ability, anxiety management, and conceptualizing skills. Moreover, passive coping was found to directly affect burnout and indirectly affect burnout through self-integration, the ability to empathize and anxiety management; which operated as partial mediators.
